I just realized January is nearly over and I haven’t watched Gone With the Wind yet.
What does Gone With the Wind have to do with January?
Well, nothing, really. It’s one of those traditions that I never intended, but after doing it for a few years, it seemed like an annual requirement. It’s just that this time of year is cold and dark and there are a lot of days when you just want to curl up on the sofa and watch a movie. It’s the perfect time of the year for those really long ones.
During the rest of the year, we watch movies with the kids or after they go to bed. That means the movie needs to be done by 8:30/9:00-ish (when it’s the family), or it doesn’t start until 9:00/9:30-ish when it’s just the two of us. I just can’t hang like I used to and 11:30 is about as late as I like to stay up.
That means, most of the time, our movies need to be 2 hours or less.
But in January (and the rest of the winter), the sun sets earlier, and even when the sun is up, it’s often cloudy and dreary anyway. You just want to snuggle more.
An epic film seems like a great way to spend the afternoon!
Also, it’s a quiet time of year. I think winter is a time of rest and renewal. We’re supposed to hibernate a little. Movies should be engaging and make you think, but not stress your adrenals. This is the time for dramas, musicals, and classics.
Some great choices for a cold winter day:
Gone With the Wind
The Sound of Music
My Fair Lady
Cleopatra (my kids and I watched this over several days earlier this year when we were studying that time period in history. I don’t know if we would watch it again, but it kept their attention. They enjoyed it as a replacement for history lessons!)
Swiss Family Robinson
The Princess Bride (not a long one, but always a great choice!)
Fiddler on the Roof
For the Grown-Ups:
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Count of Monte Cristo
Master and Commander: the Far Side of the World
I’ve never seen it, but I’ve always thought Doctor Zhivago would make a great January movie.
As with any movie list, there are probably some really great ones I’ve forgotten or left out. Tell me what your favorite snuggly day movie is and I’ll add it to the list!
Stay cozy, my friends!
