Family Movie Night: How the Grinch Stole Christmas

November 18, 2018

< back to blog

We love our themed family movie nights.  They’re a great way to make the evening super fun and special without going out or spending a lot of money.

All it takes is a little creative direction.

If you’re thinking, that sounds like fun, but I have no idea where to start, no worries! I’m happy to share my creativity.

Christmas seems to be a time of year when we all really like to make things special, but good gravy there is so much else to do. . .who’s got the brain power to think up something clever?

Dr. Seuss Who-ville Decor

In the wonderful world of Dr. Seuss, there seems to be a theme of unusual shapes that seem to defy gravity.  There’s also a lot of lines and circles.

We took that idea and played off of it to create our Dr. Suess banner.  Simply purchase some green and red pompoms and a bit of string (we got ours near the crochet section at Walmart.) You could also use embroidery thread.

With a large, embroidery needle, take the string and string up the pom poms with about a hands-breadth in between, approximately 4-6 inches.

A needle and thread and some air-popped popcorn makes for a glorious, traditional banner too!

We also made these huge paper snowflakes.

Since it’s Christmas, your home is probably already filled with decor so you don’t need anything else to set the mood.

Grinch-themed Who-ville Look

Okay, maybe I had a little too much fun with this!

My girls and I went all out with over-the-top rosey cheeks, red lips, & glittery eye shadow.

For the fancy hair-do, we followed this tutorial: Cindy Lou Hair Do

If you’ve got shorter hair like me, just find a small cup and put it on top of your head.

Gather your hair in a ponytail around the cup and tie it off on top.  Keep the tails tucked into the ponytail band so you end up with a fun little curl on top!

What to Serve While You Watch The Grinch

Let’s face it.  The food is the most important part of the movie night. . .after the movie of course.

Skip all the hair, make-up and decor if you want, but don’t skimp on the goodies!

Roast Beast Sliders

When I was a kid, my favorite part of the movie was when the Grinch, he himself, carved the roast beast.

I also really though it was hilarious anytime my aunt and mom referred to roast beef as “roast beast.”

Since a full on roast is not exactly movie-friendly, I highly suggest you serve these Roast Beast Sliders instead.

Who Hash

“He even took their last can of Who Hash.”

I always wondered what Who Hash was.  It sounded vaguely like sauerkraut to me so I decided my Who Hash recipe needed to include cabbage.

But the majority of my household isn’t big on fermented foods, so I went for a sauteed cabbage.

This recipe turned out much better than I expected and can even be used on a regular family dinner night.

The wild shapes of the “meatballs” and the colorful veggies make it totally Seussical.

Grinch Punch

Grinch Punch was a fun treat to make. We mixed up green Jello and Sprite for a fizzy, frothy green drink!

I found a green version of jello that was called “Galactic Berry” and had BB8 from Star Wars on it, but any green colored Jello would work.

Alternatively, you could do the old ginger-ale and lime sherbet punch.  What once was a familiar favorite to the point of becoming passe is a new hit with the post-millennial kiddos.

Heart Grew Three Sizes Cookies

Christmas means cookies.

They just go together!

These cookies are great any time of the year, but with the special cut out shape and jam, they are reminiscent of the climactic scene where “the Grinch’s small heart grew three sizes that day”.

The three different sizes of hearts are sure to be a hit with your little ones.

My daughter insisted on taking a few to her teacher, which I am sure was appreciated!

Wrap it Up with a Bow

The only bad part about movie night is that it comes to an end.

My kids have a hard time transitioning to bed right after a show, so I like to prepare some conversation topics or something to transition their minds from the screen to the bed.

Of course, the perfect post-viewing activity here is reading the Grinch!

I didn’t have the book until I was an adult and now it’s an essential part of our Christmas fun.

If you still need the book, you can get your copy here: How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Ask your kids some questions like

  • What was the funniest part?
  • Do you think the Grinch was a good guy or a bad guy?
  • What did you think was going to happen when Cindy Lou Who caught the Grinch?
  • What would you do if you woke up on Christmas and everything was gone?
  • Why did the Who’s sing at the end even when all their stuff was gone?
  • What really makes us happy on Christmas?

The most important thing about Family Movie Night is to HAVE FUN! Enjoy gathering together and creating your family memories.
