Dr Seuss Grinch Recipe: Who Hash

November 21, 2018

< back to blog

I love making movie-themed food. Food is a unique opportunity to step inside some of our favorite movies and story books and immerse ourselves in the experience. This recipe is straight out of the magical mind of Dr. Seuss.  It’s weird and wonderful. . .and totally easy!  The perfect combo for your Dr. Seuss Party or Grinch Family Movie Night.

Who Hash Recipe for a Dr. Seuss Party or Grinch Movie Night

When I put together this crazy How the Grinch Stole Christmas family movie night, I knew I needed some Who-hash!

I’ve always loved the line “why the Grinch even took their last can of Who hash.”

It sounded like something no one would really want to eat and somehow, I assumed it must have been saurkraut, though I actually like that as an adult.

With this childhood perception in mind, I decide my Who Hash would be cabbage-based, but I couldn’t let it be some icky weird stuff that my kiddos would snub their noses at.

It had to be. . .FUN!

What’s more fun than silly shapes and crazy colors?

The most delicious cabbage dish I’ve ever had was cabbage, onions, and sausage.  That seemed like the perfect flavor combo for my Whoville treat.

So I started with the most colorful varieties of cabbage–purple aka red–and green onions. (Editors note: In the photo, you’ll see sliced leeks instead of green onions.)

Chopped into thin ribbons, the cabbage already has a silly shape.

The green onions are cut normally and just for color.

I tossed the veggies into a large preheated skillet with a drizzle of olive oil.

Now, about the sausage. . .

Bratwurst!

I sliced the brats, casings and all, into 1-inch segments.

I’ll be honest.  I didn’t realize how hilarious this was going to turn out.  As the brat slices cooked, the casings shrunk up and the sausage blossomed out on either side.

The sausage slices ended up looking more like alien meat balls. Oh well, that’s perfect for something out of the world of Seuss!

I seasoned it all up with some salt, pepper, and a splash of white wine vinegar to cut the richness of the sausage.

It was delicious but made SO MUCH.  If you’re serving this alongside Roast Beast Sliders, you can easily half the recipe.  On it’s own it makes a fantastic weeknight dinner or party dish.

Who Hash is such an easy dish to add to your family menu.  It works great as a fun, festive treat, or an in-a-hurry weeknight dinner!

Serve alongside Roast Beast, I mean Beef Sliders.

Snuggle up with some Grinch Punch and a How The Grinch Stole Christmas for a complete movie night and dinner.
